Basheer Amiri is a writer, director and producer of feature films, documentaries and music videos. He is a four-time winner of the Black Reel Awards for Best Director and Best Original Screenplay. In 2000 he received a Special Jury Award from the American Black Film Festival for "Best Short Documentary" for "A State of Emergency: The Crisis in Kenya." In 2003 he received a Special Jury Award from the American Black Film Festival for "Best Documentary" for "The Battle Within: The Battle Over Black Mental Health."
